The mid-1990s were therefore dominated by expanding communitybased teaching and investment in research capacity building. A huge growth in student exposure to medicine based in general practice was The University of Birmingham 35 supported by SIFT funding. This teaching was based in relatively few practices to enable a programme of significant capital investment for dedicated practice accommodation for teaching (two dedicated student consulting rooms and a seminar room/library for each practice) and major training of NHS teaching staff.

As a result, a large donation was made enabling the setting up of a unit for teaching communication skills and the employment of specialist staff and equipment. Subsequently this donation was repeated. Robin Hull had in the meantime secured a part-time appointment to a hospice in the region and this helped us to expose students to care for terminally ill patients. Another area of activity was education for general practice staff. This was a desert prior to the 1960s. Full-time training courses for medical secretaries or receptionists were started locally in the mid-1960s and soon spread nationally, eventually involving over 160 colleges.

The latter had been established in 1985, initially mainly supporting commercial pharmaceutical trials which brought us two essential ingredients – funding (to develop the infrastructure) and scientific rigour in trial design and the strict governance procedures linked to early-phase drug trials. The funding to support our cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and cancer teams was won in the new NHS R&D applied clinical research funding streams, including a specific cardiovascular diseases panel, and a one-off MRC primary care research programme.
