Since the stiffening rib is thicker than the blade, backsaws are limited in the depth they can cut. Backsaws usually have relatively closely spaced teeth, often with little or no set. They may have either rip or crosscut teeth. Included in the backsaw family are miter saws, tenon saws, dovetail saws, gent’s saws, and dozuki saws. They can be found with different handle configurations and in different sizes. As you might expect, some are named for the purpose they were designed for, but they are not limited to those purposes.
Another advantage to using a knife is that you are not only drawing a line, you are scoring it, which severs the top fibers of the wood and makes splintering and tear-out cutting less likely (see Figure 3-8). Block planes are usually the first plane a beginning woodworker acquires. They are smaller than bench planes and can be used with one hand. These planes excel at cutting end grain. Block planes are good for small planing jobs. Figure 3-26 shows some of the essential differences between block and bench planes. It may surprise you to learn that chisels and planes do not come ready to use right out of the box. To get the maximum benefit from these tools, you have to do a little work. Look at your new chisels under good light, and you can probably still see the machining marks.
